Orthopaedic Surgeon, Singapore

Dr Tan Shi Ming has dedicated more than 20 years practising medicine. As a MOH-accredited and fellowship-trained surgeon, he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in the field of orthopaedics.

Dr Tan graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore and went on to complete his Orthopaedic Training under the Singhealth Orthopaedic Residency Programme. Upon completion of his specialist training, he was awarded the prestigious MOH award for fellowship training and underwent subspecialty training in the field of foot and ankle surgery in Bristol (United Kingdom), Basel (Switzerland) and Grenoble (France) under the tutelage of Drs Steve Hepple, Ian Winson, Yves Tourne and Professor Victor Valderrabano. The period of subspecialty training honed his skills in minimally invasive (keyhole) percutaneous and arthroscopic surgical techniques as well complex joint replacements (ankle) and deformity correction techniques.

Upon his return from his fellowship training, he served as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Singapore General Hospital and holds concurrent appointments as Assistant Professor in both NUS-YLL School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School. His keen interest in medical education and training led him to undertake core faculty roles in Singhealth Orthopaedic Residency and PGY-1 Residency Programmes as well as AO Trauma Foundation and Regional Surgical Cadaveric Courses. As an active medical educator, he was also heavily involved as both clinical lecturer and examiner for all 3 local medical schools in their core curriculum.

An avid athlete, Dr Tan has participated in a wide range of sporting activities, including playing competitive waterpolo for Singapore Combined Schools and National Youth Team in his schooling years. He continues to enjoy running and football on top of hiking and enjoying the outdoors. As such, he fully understands the debilitating nature of orthopaedic injuries and its impact on recreational and professional athletes, both young and old. Dr Tan enjoys working with patients to bring them back to their desired level of activity utilizing a tailored and individualized approach for each patient.

Not everyone requires surgery and Dr Tan can provide medical advice and recommend a network of allied health professionals to suit each patient’s individual condition.

Dr Tan has authored numerous journal and textbook chapter publications on various orthopaedic disorders. He continues to lectures both locally and regionally to Orthopaedic Surgeons and other healthcare professionals.
